Andersonville visit chamber website |
Tucked into the southwest corner of Edgewater is Andersonville, a charming community bound by Foster, Clark, Ravenswood and Bryn Mawr. Andersonville has a decidedly Swedish presence. The community is particularly known for its diversity, including a continued Swedish cultural presence led by the Swedish American Museum, the Swedish Bakery and other Swedish delicatessens.
It is also known for its unique commercial district, made up almost entirely of locally owned, independent shops, restaurants, cafes, taverns and service providers.
The main shopping street is North Clark Street, which runs roughly north-south. The stretch of North Clark Street south of West Foster Avenue is sometimes called South Foster, or "SoFo." The stretch north of Bryn Mawr still retains a good number of Hispanic-owned business as well as some restaurants and cafes serving Andersonville's more recent transplants.
The neighborhood is also proud of several landmark homes that have been well preserved. Not a single home façade on the north side of West Farragut Avenue has been altered since the quiet street was developed in 1920.
Housing: In 2009, the average single-family home in Andersonville sold for $813,393. The prices varied from $335,000 to $1,600,000. Townhouses and condominiums sold for an average price of $317,467. Two and three-flat units sold for an average of $450,354.
Transportation: Andersonville is served by the Howard-Dan Ryan "el" with stops at Loyola (Devon), Granville, Thorndale, Bryn Mawr and Berwyn. The Metra commuter train stops near the western edge of the neighborhood at Lawrence and Ravenswood. Travel to the Loop on Lake Shore Drive takes about 15 minutes. |
