Gold Coast
Bound roughly by Clark Street, North Avenue, Lake Michigan, Chicago Avenue, Rush and Oak Streets, the Gold Coast is Chicago's wealthiest neighborhood. But unlike the most affluent suburbs, the Gold Coast is diverse and exciting as well as exclusive.

Landmark mansions, such as the one Potter Palmer built on Lake Shore Drive in the early 1880s, have a lakefront view as do the luxury condominiums that line Lake Shore Drive. The area is also rich in vintage walkups which possess a diversity of architecture. Neighborhood assets include the lakefront, restaurants and an elegant shopping district.

Gold Coast residents can walk to Lincoln Park Zoo, the beach, and to stores such as Barney's New York and dozens of charming boutiques. Shoppers have easy access to Michigan Avenue's magnificent mile and its upscale stores.

Housing. The average sale price of a single-family home in the Gold Coast was $2,532,500 in 2009. Condominium prices vary widely, from a low of about $100,000 to a high of $3,895,956. In 2009 the average sale price of condominiums and townhouses on the Near North Side was $428,467.

The Gold Coast features a wall of luxury high-rises that offer beautiful views of Lake Michigan. Behind these are gray stone and brownstone houses which remind one of the area's original turn-of-the-century charm.

Transportation. Downtown attractions such as the Lyric Opera, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Art Institute of Chicago and the United Center are only a short cab ride away. The Loop is accessible by bus or subway.
