The Old Town Triangle area was designated a Chicago Landmark district in 1977 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The old Town neighborhood, bound by Armitage Avenue, Clark Street, Division Street and the former Ogden Avenue still retains some of its original cobblestone streets and antique street lights.
Old Town is the home of the famous Second City comedy troupe. Thousands of visitors also descend on the neighborhood for the Old Town Art Fair, a juried fair that features food and entertainment while providing the opportunity to tour the neighborhood.
The neighborhood is also home to St. Michaels Church, originally a Bavarian-built church, and one of seven to survive the path of the Great Chicago Fire. Many of the streets and alleys, particularly in the Old Town Triangle section, predate the Great Chicago Fire and do not all adhere to a typical Chicago grid pattern.
Housing: In 2009, the average single- family home sold for $1,935,000 with prices ranging all the way from the low $100’s to around $5,000,000.
The average townhouse and condominium sold for $404,439.
Transportation: Convenience is one reason so many people want to live in the Old Town Area. CTA buses run on Halsted and Lincoln Avenue. The Ravenswood "el" train makes a stop at Armitage and the Howard "el" train has a stop at the intersection of North and Clybourn.
Lake shore Drive is a few minutes drive east, and the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) exits are west on North Avenue. The Loop is only 10 minutes away. |
