Just north of Lakeview and brushing against Edgewater lies Uptown, which is bound by Foster (5200N), Irving Park (4000N), Lake Michigan, and Ashland (1600W).

Uptown has a deep history and is home to two iconic theatres. The Green Mill, which used to be a speakeasy in the days of Al Capone and the Aragon Ballroom, which hosted acts like Frank Sinatra and Charlie Chaplin are both in the heart of Uptown. Both of these theatres are still standing today.

Uptown is a larger area that comprises of the smaller sub-neighborhoods of Buena Park, Margate Park, and Sheridan Park.

There was a revitalization of this area in the past couple of decades and now it is home to plenty of theatres, coffee shops, boutiques and restaurants. Between the variety of entertainment options and distinct housing, Uptown has become a neighborhood that is sought after by many.

The lake is accessible through both the Foster and Montrose street beaches opening countless entertainment options and open access to Lake Shore Drive.

Many of the spacious mansions and apartment buildings from the 1900s were converted into rooming houses to provide more affordable housing.

However, over the last 20 years, these architectural gems have been renovated and restored by individuals and developers intent on salvaging the heritage of this lakefront neighborhood. While it is growing in popularity, there are still many opportunities to find affordable renovated and renovation- ready properties in Uptown.

Housing: There is a wide range of pricing options for housing in the Uptown Area. In 2009, single family homes sold anywhere from $330,000 to $1,350,000. The average sale price of both townhouses as well as condominiums was $245,354.

Transportation: There are plenty of ways to get around through public transportation in the Uptown neighborhoods. Both the "red" and "purple" line CTA trains run through the neighborhood and busses run on Foster, Irving Park and Ashland. Express busses run along Lake Shore Drive and go downtown. It is about a 15 minute drive downtown on Lake Shore Drive from Uptown.
